Humanin

Humanin (MAPRGFSCLLLLTSEIDLPVKRRA) is a 21-amino-acid mitochondria-derived peptide encoded within the 16S ribosomal RNA gene of the mitochondrial genome and first identified through expression cloning from a human Alzheimer-resistant brain region ¹. Molecular formula: C₁₀₆H₁₉₂N₃₄O₂₇S₃. Molecular weight: 2532.1 g/mol.

In-vitro neuronal culture studies have examined Humanin's cytoprotective properties against amyloid beta-induced cell death and its interaction with the IGFBP-3/PAPP-A axis ². Biophysical assays have characterized its receptor binding at gp130, CNTFR, and IL27Ra heterocomplex signaling ³. Isothermal titration calorimetry studies have measured its binding affinity for Bax at the mitochondrial outer membrane.
